Marv Is Out in the Desert: Cardinals Are Trading Marvin Harrison Jr., and All Roads Point to C.J. Stroud

Arizona told the No. 4 pick he's inactive Sunday while it finishes a deal. The destination isn't official, but the chatter says Houston. Here's what it means for your fantasy roster.

Two and a half years ago, Marvin Harrison Jr. was the No. 4 pick and the can't-miss receiver prospect of his draft class. Saturday morning, the Arizona Cardinals told him to take Sunday off because they're shipping him out.

The Cardinals are finalizing a deal to trade Harrison, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter and NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. Arizona informed Harrison he'll be inactive for Sunday's game against the Detroit Lions while the trade gets finished.

As of 9:45 a.m. PT Saturday, no destination has been announced. Here's what's actually been reported, and what it means for your fantasy team.

Where is he going? (Short answer: probably Houston)

The team on the other end is still officially a mystery, but the smoke is all coming from one direction.

  • Houston is the name. Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk reported that league chatter "centers on the Texans," per multiple sources. Schefter also mentioned Houston as a team that has been involved, and CBS Sports' Matt Zenitz confirmed the Texans have been in contact with Arizona. Per Schefter, a Texans source would only say the team "can't confirm or deny" its interest.
  • The price. Florio reported the package is expected to include a second-round pick. Houston offered a 2028 second-rounder, while Arizona has been pushing for a 2027 second. The Ringer's Tom Pelissero reported earlier Saturday that the Cardinals wanted a second and possibly more.
  • The Colts are out. Longtime Colts reporter Mike Chappell of FOX59 reported Indianapolis did its "due diligence" on the son of the franchise legend, but "that's all." ESPN's Stephen Holder also reported the Colts won't be landing him, per Bleacher Report.
  • Why the secrecy? NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported both teams "prefer the trade destination is not announced" until after their Week 5 games. Schefter said no trade will be completed until after Sunday's games are played.

So the announcement could come Sunday night or Monday. Our read: unless someone jumps in late with a better pick, this is going to be the Texans.

How it got here

Harrison had 62 catches for 885 yards and eight touchdowns as a rookie. He followed that with 41 catches for 608 yards and four scores in 12 games last season, according to Bleacher Report and CBS Sports. Through four games in 2026 he has five catches for 85 yards and one touchdown. Schefter noted that his 12 targets rank fifth on the team, behind Trey McBride, Michael Wilson, Kendrick Bourne and running back Jeremiyah Love.

The signs were there. Harrison hired agents Todd France and Tory Dandy on Sept. 23, per the NFLPA database cited by ESPN, after going without representation. CBS Sports noted that GM Monti Ossenfort had publicly said Harrison was still in the team's plans.

Our take (opinion): Arizona didn't fail with Harrison because he can't play. It failed because he was never the focus of the offense. You don't use the No. 4 overall pick on a receiver and then make him your fifth read. Somebody is going to get a 24-year-old with first-round traits at a second-round price, and the Cardinals are going to regret it.

The Stroud reunion angle

If it is Houston, the fit makes total sense. Harrison and C.J. Stroud were teammates at Ohio State, as Florio pointed out, and Houston's receiver room needs help:

  • Jayden Higgins is out for the season with a torn ACL suffered in August, per NFL.com.
  • Tank Dell (knee) has been ruled out for Sunday's game at Tennessee, per Rotoworld.
  • Nico Collins is the engine. In the two games he's played, he has 14 catches for 193 yards and three touchdowns, per HoustonTexans.com.

The Texans are 0-4 and play at the also-winless Titans on Sunday (10 a.m. PT). Houston needs an outside weapon next to Collins.

Fantasy fallout: what to do right now

Week 5: Bench Harrison. He is inactive, full stop, with no game-time decision coming.

Rest of season (opinion):

  • Don't drop him. If he lands in Houston, he steps in as Stroud's No. 2 target behind Collins in a pass-heavy offense. That's a big upgrade over being fifth in line in Arizona. Treat him as a WR3 with upside. Expect a slow start while he learns the playbook.
  • Stroud gets a small bump. More good receivers means fewer throws to the No. 3 and No. 4 options.
  • Houston depth receivers take a hit. Jaylin Noel was a deep-league flex idea this week with Dell out, but a Harrison arrival caps that ceiling quickly.
  • Arizona's leftovers: Michael Wilson and Kendrick Bourne were already ahead of Harrison in targets. That pecking order is now locked in, so take a small bump for each and stay patient with McBride, who remains a weekly starter.
  • Buy-low window: If someone in your league is panic-dropping or giving Harrison away, now is the time to make an offer, before the destination is official.
